 Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a new approach to being able to describe and display the information required for the design, construction and operation of constructed facilities. It is able to bring together the different threads of information used in construction into a single operating environment thus reducing, and often eliminating, the need for the many different types of paper document currently in use. == Using IFC to Build SMART ==

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a new approach to being able to describe and display the information required for the design, construction and operation of constructed facilities. To use BIM effectively however, and for the benefits of its use to be released, the quality of communication between the different participants in the construction process needs to be improved. If the information needed is available when it is needed, and the quality of that information is appropriate, then the construction process can be improved. For this to happen, there must be a common understanding of building processes and of the information that is needed for and results from their execution.

The Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) provides a comprehensive reference to the totality of information within the lifecycle of a constructed facility. It has been created as an integrated whole in response to the identification of business needs expressed by the international building construction community. It does not contain a comprehensive reference to individual processes within building construction.

The case for a comprehensive reference to processes in building construction is clear and compelling. By integrating information with the process, the value of such a reference is greatly enhanced and it becomes a key tool in really delivering the benefits of BIM.

The IDM will provide the integrated comprehensive reference required by identifying the discrete processes undertaken within building construction together with the information that is required for and results from their execution.

The IDM will target both BIM users and solution providers.
* For BIM users, it will provide a simple to understand, plain language description of building construction processes, the requirements for information to be provided to enable the process to be carried out successfully, additional information that may need to be provided by the user and the expected end results of the process.

=== Content ===
The IDM will grow progressively to provide a comprehensive reference to the processes that may be executed within building construction. From this reference list, end users will be able to specify those that are relevant to the needs of their specific project and, in so doing, will specify the information that needs to be communicated between the various participants.
* Each process will be described individually in the IDM.
* Each description will be in two parts, the first part being targeted towards the BIM user whilst the second part will be focused on the BIM software developer.
* The IDM will be developed as an electronic document and it will be designed so that target groups see only those parts of each process that are relevant to their needs. Four views of the IDM information are currently anticipated:
** Executive users see only the overview ‘user’ description
** Technical users see the overview and the extended ‘user’ description
** Solution providers see the functional ‘flow of events’ and the IFC capabilities supporting the events
** Solution providers see the ‘IFC schema view’ supporting the described process
*Additional views of IDM information may be developed as necessary

Specific parts of each process description will include:
* An overview of the process describing its objective
* The stages in a project at which the process is expected to be relevant
* Non technical descriptions of the information required as input to the process and the expected source of that information
* Description of the expected results of the process
* A technical description of the actions within the process, the specific IFC capabilities supporting the actions and prescribed values of attributes where appropriate
* An IFC schema view for the process (in both the EXPRESS and ifcXML forms)

For solution providers, descriptions of IFC capabilities will also be developed for reusable ‘functional parts’ which are commonly occurring sets of data that may be used by any number of processes.
