CityGML - City Geography Markup Language
The City Geography Markup Language (CityGML) is a new and innovative concept for the modelling and exchange of 3D city and landscape models that is quickly being adopted on an international level. CityGML is a common information model for the representation of 3D urban objects. It defines the classes and relations for the most relevant topographic objects in cities and regional models with respect to their geometrical, topological, semantical and appearance properties. Included are generalization hierarchies between thematic classes, aggregations, relations between objects, and spatial properties. In contrast to other 3D vector formats, CityGML is based on a rich, general purpose information model in addition to geometry and graphics content that allows to employ virtual 3D city models for sophisticated analysis tasks in different application domains like simulations, urban data mining, facility management, and thematic inquiries. Targeted application areas explicitly include urban and landscape planning; architectural design; tourist and leisure activities; 3D cadastres; environmental simulations; mobile telecommunications; disaster management; homeland security; vehicle and pedestrian navigation; training simulators; and mobile robotics.
CityGML is realised as an open data model and XML-based format for the storage and exchange of virtual 3D city models. It is implemented as an application schema for the Geography Markup Language version 3.1.1 (GML3), the extendible international standard for spatial data exchange issued by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) and the ISO TC211. CityGML is an official OGC Standard and can be used free of charge.
The CityGMLWiki is an open portal to publish and share information about CityGML. However, it is not the offical website of the CityGML. Please find the official website of CityGML at http://www.citygml.org.

The members of the Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc. (OGC) have adopted version 1.0.0 of CityGML as an official OGC Standard (official OGC press release). Over the last 9 months the CityGML SWG has done a lot of work on finally bringing CityGML to an adopted international standard. Many thanks go to the members of the CityGML SWG, to the members of the SIG 3D, and to the whole CityGML community for the support and effort in making this happen. The final CityGML version 1.0.0 Standard document can be obtained from the CityGML section of the OGC web presence (direct download link). The CityGML XML Schema definition files will be published shortly by the OGC. |

The final vote on CityGML 1.0 for adoption as OGC International Standard has been launched within the OGC Technical Committee. The adaption vote coincides with a 60 day Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) consideration period, and thus is due by August 12, 2008. |

The OGC has announced the next OGC Interoperability Days to be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 3 and 4, 2008, in Potsdam, Germany (official OGC press release). CityGML will be an agenda highlight for the Technical Interoperability Day on Tuesday. The SIG 3D has been granted a considerable time slot for presentations and real world examples on CityGML. The OGC Interoperability Days are open both for OGC members and non OGC members. On both days, attendance is free and attendees will have opportunities to attend company and project presentations. Detailed program and registration information are available at http://www.opengeospatial.org/event/080603techinterop and http://www.opengeospatial.org/event/080604interop. Please note, that registration is free, but attendees must register separately for each day. The event will be held at GFZ Potsdam, Telegrafenberg 326, 14473 Potsdam, www.gfz-potsdam.de. |

The OGC has opened the 30-days public comment phase on the candidate CityGML version 1.0 Encoding Standard (official OGC press release). The public is thereby requested to submit comments on the draft CityGML version 1.0 specification to the OGC. The corresponding Request for Comment (RFC) can be downloaded from http://www.opengeospatial.org/standards/requests/47. Comments are due by March 20, 2008. |

A CityGML Standards Working Group (SWG) has been formed within the OGC. The purpose of this Standards Working Group is to progress the CityGML version 0.4.0 Best Practices document (OGC Doc. No. 07-062) to the state of an adopted OGC standard. The SWG is chaired by Ordnance Survey, Great Britain, and co-chaired by Technische Universität Berlin, Germany. |

The OGC Technical Committee has approved the CityGML Specification version 0.4.0 as an OGC Best Practices Paper at its meeting in Paris. Therefore, CityGML is an official position of the OGC membership on 3D city modelling. The Specification document (OGC Document No. 07-062, PDF 9.8MB) can be freely downloaded from the Best Practices Paper section of the Open Geospatial Consortium website. Within OGC, CityGML is discussed and further developed within the 3D Information Management (3DIM) Working Group (formerly CAD/GIS Interoperability Working Group). A Change Document tracking the changes from the previous CityGML version 0.3.0 (OGC Document No. 06-057r1, PDF 3.1MB) to CityGML version 0.4.0 can be obtained here (PDF 4MB). Please note, that this document is not an official part of the CityGML Specification. It is only intended to give an informative and informal overview of the significant changes and to reflect the discussions on received change proposals and comments. |
